FOUR50 is building a network of experts, activists and enthusiasts committed to preventing the epidemic of chronic disease and raising awareness about its devastating consequences. It aims to do this by focusing on the 3 risk factors (poor diet, lack of physical activity, tobacco use) that lead to four chronic diseases (CVD, diabetes, chronic lung diseases and some cancers) contributing to more than 50% of deaths worldwide.

African Conservation Telegraph

African Conservation Telegraph is a thrice-yearly newsletter published free of charge by the Africa section of the US Society for Conservation Biology. The newsletter aims to provide news and information on conservation science in Africa.

African Drought Risk and Development Network

This UN Development Programme initiative helps drought-prone countries prepare for extreme weather events and reduce anticipated negative impacts. The website includes succinct overviews of drought-risk in individual African countries, as well as a comprehensive links section pointing to relevant networks, research centres, regional organisations and other sources of information, often in developing countries.

African Journal of Biotechnology

The African Journal of Biotechnology is a peer-reviewed online journal that publishes research in food, agricultural and industrial applications of biochemistry, microbiology, genomics and proteomics.

All articles are free to access and readers can also sign up to free email alerts containing the table of contents for each new issue.

African Journal of Food Agriculture, Nutrition and Development

AJFAND is an academic journal — published quarterly — by the Rural Outreach Programme, a non-profit company based in Kenya. The journal's free-access website features peer-reviewed articles about poverty, food security, disease and agriculture in Africa. It also provides commentaries, short communications, book reviews, and relevant news and events. Students can submit work to the student section.

African Journals OnLine

AJOL is an online database of more than 50 African science journals. Run by INASP, it provides access to tables of contents and, when available, abstracts and links to full text articles. It also offers a photocopy document delivery service for all of its listed titles. Users must register (free).

African Ministerial Council on Science and Technology

AMCOST provides a forum for formulating and implementing policies for science, technology and innovation issues that have an impact on African development. It was established by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Union in November 2003, and has since developed and adopted Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action.

AMCOST's website outlines ongoing projects in biodiversity, energy, water, material sciences, mathematics and space science technologies, among others. It also offers information on the activities and rationale behind both the African Panel on Biotechnology and the African Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators Initiative.

AfricanCrops.Net

AfricanCrops.Net — funded by the Rockefeller Foundations Biotechnology, Breeding and Seed Systems Programme and the Partnership to Fight Striga of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation — publishes a monthly newsletter with information on upcoming conferences, training programmes and funding opportunities. It also hosts a discussion forum where visitors can share experiences of issues such as crop improvement and molecular marker applications.

The website links to a wide range of documents and points to resources dedicated to specific African crops such as cassava, cowpea and sorghum. It also hosts an extensive collection of links to online databases, glossaries, bibliographies, search engines, genetic maps and statistics relating to African-focused biotechnology and plant breeding research.

Afro AIDSInfo

AfroAIDSinfo is a web-based project of the South African Medical Research Council, which disseminates information about HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa to the media, researchers, health professionals, the public, educators and policy makers. The site has news and resources including research briefings, policy reports and health information, with a particular emphasis on access to antiretroviral drugs.

AIACC Data, Methods and Synthesis

This site provides access to reports of projects and case studies conducted as part of the international Assessments of Impacts and Adaptations to Climate Change in Multiple Regions and Sectors (AIACC) initiative. A searchable database of projects by country, region, and sector contains some of the final reports in pdf format.

The projects cover adaptation in almost all sectors, with five projects with final reports in southern Africa, one project in eastern Africa and three projects in western Africa. The site also provides accessible summaries of each project, as well as updates posted throughout the duration of the studies.

Biomass 4 Africa

This web portal is the starting point for Africa-related biomass information. It contains the latest news on biofuels research on the continent, as well as an events calendar and discussion forum.

Cancerworld

This is a portal to the websites of associations that aim to advance our understanding of oncology and how to better treat patients with cancer, both in the developed and developing worlds.

Each partner association is represented in the portal with a website describing and providing information relating to the organisation, its structure, news, research projects, activities, membership, resource information, selected links, and so on.

Cancerworld also hosts the Cancer Media Service, operated by the European School of Oncology and aimed at journalists. The independent service aims to put cancer research into context, which it does by publishing well written and easy-to-read summaries of the latest cancer research. Perhaps even more useful is its list of resources for journalists that includes links to several medical dictionaries and cancer organisations worldwide.

Climate Change Adaptation – Sub Saharan Africa

This online resource captures current articles, reports, papers and books sourced from nongovernmental organisations and development agencies such as ActionAid, SouthSouthNorth, the International Institute for Environment and Development and the World Bank. The site features short summaries and links to full papers, all of which are relevant to adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa.

EarthWire/Africa

EarthWire/Africa provides a free daily overview of environmental news from 14 countries in southern Africa. The site reviews more than 40 newspapers for environment-related news stories. Press releases and news from research organisations, the public sector, and environmental organisations are also included.

Integrated Regional Information Networks: PlusNews

IRIN provides news, information and reports on humanitarian issues affecting sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia for an estimated daily email readership of over 50,000. This includes the latest HIV/AIDS reports accessible through their PlusNews service.

Knowledge for Development

Knowledge for Development is a web-based source of information on science and technology for agriculture and rural development in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. It promotes collaboration between agricultural research and development scientists and technologists in ACP countries, and facilitates dialogue between ACP and European communities with the aim of strengthening policy formulation on science and technology issues.

This website contains a number of useful documents on biofuels and biotechnology in ACP countries.

Malaria Consortium UK

This non-profit organisation works with partners in Ghana and Uganda to improve the control and treatment of malaria. It offers services such as programme design and development, consultancy services, and technical support services to other non-governmental organisations. Information resources include annual reports, publications, and links to journals and organisations.

Science in Africa

A free online African science magazine published on a monthly basis, which reports on the latest research developments from the continent in the form of readable news, feature and opinion articles. Science in Africa in run by two biotechnologists from Rhodes University, South Africa and is funded by the South African Foundation for Education, Science, and Technology (FEST), MERC, and Sasol.

South African Health Information Network

SA HealthInfo provides information about health and health research issues in Southern Africa, with topics ranging from HIV and malaria, to traditional medicines and nutrition. This part of the site provides information about ethics in research, including the South African MRC's latest guidance.

Southern African AIDS Information Dissemination Service

The Southern Africa AIDS Information Dissemination Service is a Zimbabwe-based resource that informs, supports, and promotes prevention, care, long-term planning and coping with the impact of HIV/AIDS. This includes the provision of information and technical assistance to NGOs, government bodies and other institutions, as well as Internet and media training. Its publications include factsheets and a quarterly newsletter on HIV/AIDS news in Southern Africa.
